(I had started writing a new collection of poetry in 2020, just before COVID hit, to have been titled: "Moving On." I never finished it, and no longer have the desire to. Still, I wrote these and there's no reason not to share them. This one seems to be a result of 20 Little Poetry Projects.)

Two peas in a pod are we, cliche as that may be,

even with our many contradictions.

Even though I looked right at you,

I swear I noticed your voice first.

Its sound caressed my skin,

and enveloped my soul in its warmth

with the softness of a child's first blanket.

I never thought of Denny's as a romantic place.

I'd also never been on a coffee date,

but by the end of it, I knew Kim had done a good thing,

introducing us to one another.

Not five days later,

we couldn't keep our hands off each other,

stretched out on that rickety futon in your bachelor pad,

your hand up my shirt, your mischievous smile (MY smile)

following me out the door and for the rest of my life.

The wiggle of your hips that weekend during Gretchen Wilson

I swear made me fall in love with you.

Trust and believe I've never seen a man move like that before.

My grin must have stretched from ear-to-ear

standing there watching you move.

Sancha certainly liked the sight, and the effect still lasts today.

Ti amo, mio amore.

“Tu stasera se perfeta per me.”

You've always looked perfect;

laying in my bed, standing in my kitchen, existing in my life.

Nine months from now will be no different.

We'll have survived sickness and health, for better or worse

before we ever said I do; just like we answered each other's questions

before they were asked.

I can already taste the cake and the champagne

and feel my legs cramping from all the dancing.

Waking up to the smell of coffee

as you place a steaming cup on my desk and kneel down to kiss me good morning

will always be my favorite way to start the day,

and will always remind me of that first date

that first cup of coffee when you held my hand

and told me everything would be okay.

"Good morning, Vietnam!"

Some of you can probably hear Robin Williams saying those words, and remember the emotions that came along with watching that movie...
